Local liquid an ideal feed this winter*

Not only are liquid feeds a ‘must buy’ option this winter, but farmers in the East Midlands are also in the fortunate position of having one of the best value liquid feeds produced locally, near Nottingham.

“A blend of two liquid co-products from the human food industry – one from wheat processing in Corby, the other from sugar beet processing at Wissington – Rouxminate is a 66% dry matter liquid feed containing 13MJ ME/kg DM and 8% crude protein,” explains Trident’s Dean Barclay. “It’s currently selling for around £139/t, which equates to just 16.2p/10MJ ME compared to 17.5p/10MJ ME for rolled wheat. That’s a saving of more than 7%!”

Liquid feeds have traditionally been more expensive than cereals, so this year’s lower relative price is a great opportunity to get the benefits of a liquid feed (sugars, increased palatability, reduced sorting and higher intakes), but with the added bonus of a feed cost saving.

“For farmers throughout the Midlands, East Anglia and South Yorkshire, and particularly those looking to improve intakes of hard-to-feed poor quality silage or bind rolled cereals into the ration to prevent sorting, Rouxminate really could be the ideal feed this winter.”
